Day Tripping to Bimini, Bahamas: A Perfect Getaway!
Ever dreamt of escaping to a tropical paradise for a day? Well, Bimini, Bahamas, is the place to make that dream a reality. Our adventure began bright and early as we hopped aboard Balearia Caribbean's Ferry from Ft. Lauderdale.
Smooth Sailing with Balearia Caribbean
Parking was a breeze with paid options available, and after a quick walk to the port, we were in! A quick tip: print your tickets ahead of time from Balearia Caribbean's website. Remember, you will need your passport, and you do go through an immigration process, so pack smart and be mindful of bag searches. As they say, "The grass isn't always greener on the other side,” wink wink.
Hello, Bimini!
Upon arrival, you're greeted by the iconic Bimini sign. Be prepared for potential delays if there are cruise ships docked, which might impact your shuttle wait time. There's a shuttle from the dock to the main area, but walking is also an option if you're up for it.
First Stop: Stuart's Conch Stand
Our first recommendation? Head straight to Stuart's Conch Stand. It's a refreshing start to the day that won't weigh you down. Plus, it's popular, and lines get long as the day progresses, especially before cruise ships depart. The conch is freshly caught and cut, so be prepared for a bit of a wait.
While you're there, try the Guac Chips for some added texture with your salad. Trust us, loading up the salad on the chips is a game-changer! And don't forget to pair it with a local soda. As for which salad to choose, go for the combo for a taste of everything.
Beaches and Beyond
Many people rave about Radio Beach, but if you don't get there early, it gets crowded fast. By the time we arrived, there weren't any chairs left, and people were setting up and selling makeshift seating. Founder Iya Thomas has been to Bimini before and loved Radio Beach, but she got there early to snag a good spot.
Instead, we headed to the Beach Club managed by Resorts World. We loved the adults-only side and the family-friendly side. There was plenty of seating and chair-to-chair drink service, making it a relaxing spot to spend the afternoon. Our Recommendation? Get the souvenir cup if you itend on getting more than one drink to save some coin.
Ending the Day at Big John's
After a day of swimming, drinking, and snacking, we highly recommend closing out your trip at Big John's. The owner was super friendly, and the food was delicious. We ordered the combo platter, which you can get grilled or fried. Iya Thomas tried the fried one in the past, which was tasty, but we recommend the grilled option for the true taste of the seafood. Don't forget to grab some drinks from the full bar.
Pro tip: If you have the opportunity to use the bathroom here, do it! The bathrooms were clean and plus-size friendly.
Wrapping Up
As the day winds down, return your golf cart, grab some souvenirs, and head back aboard the ferry. We highly recommend you bring cash to avoid the foreign transaction fees, CC fees and other miscellaneous expenses you may incur by using your card. You'll go through the immigration process again, so stay mindful. For fellow passport stamp addicts like Iya, you can get one from the office in Fisherman's Village.
Special thanks to Yolonda and Erin. The destination did not make the trip, you guys did!
