This month’s Fashionable style icon is the two-time published, plus size model and influencer Monique Cartwright.
Based in the peach state of Georgia, Monique is dedicated to empowering all sizes through her personal brand and social media platforms. Which includes a community of 50.9K+ on Instagram and Facebook. She achieves this through partnering with brands like Fashion Nova Curve, to advocate, represent and empower plus size women to feel and look their best. Check out our interview as we pick Monique’s brain with a few questions.
What inspires your style?
What defines my style is being comfortable and that makes me feel sexy and confident! I like to wear pieces that are flexible and can work from the office to a night out. One person that I look up to for fashion is Rasheeda Buckner-Frost from Love & Hip Hop. Rasheeda’s style matches my personal style so much and I absolutely love it.
This month Shapely is focused on going back to school and the office. Do you have any back to office/school tips that you would like to share?
Some back to school tips that I want to share is to only do what you can within your means. Do not go all out for back to school because you have all year to support your children and school. So only do what you can afford to do for your children and if you have anything extra then give it to the school, but your children come first. Also, start early and don’t wait to the last minute. Everyone knows that pencils, pens and notebooks are generally needed every single year so stock up on them early.
What can people learn from plus size models, like yourself?
If you’re looking to get into the model industry, my perspective is that if I can do it then you can do it. Focus, learn, do your research, invest, and go for it! In response to society and their perspective, please do not judge us because we are plus size which is the best size. Also, do not think of us as sexual objects because we are human beings with hearts, we are healthy, we are happy and will slay like any other (standard size) model. Please do not let our size fool you.
Give us three principles that you live by that have added to your success?
Stay humble, do your work and the work will come to you! Finally, stay prayed up by any means.
