7 Spring Cleaning Tips from House to Heart
Spring cleaning is more than just tangible clutter. It may be time to clear your mind, be more concise with your goals, revisit/update your business plan and so much more. We have loaded this article with tips to help you do just that.
It’s More Than Just Your Closet
What’s one of the first things you think of when Spring cleaning season comes around? If you’re like most of us, it’s your closet. Sorry to tell you but there are so many more spaces and thing in your home that can benefit from a once over. Some common things people forget are:
The coffee maker
The vent above the stove
The garbage disposal
Under the bed
Behind the radiator
The dryer vent — major fire hazard
The ceiling fan
High touch items such as the remote
Ctrl + Alt + Delete Those Old Photos
If you made it to the Spring but your relationship didn’t, it’s time to delete those photos you once thought were all cute and make room to capture new memories. Whether they’re on your phone or your hard drive, keeping them serves little to no purpose. But maybe you’re still attached and need to heal, that’s what an external hard drive or “the cloud” is for. You can get rid of them without actually getting rid of them.
I do believe that one must make room in their heart for good things to come. If you’re preoccupied with that was, you could be missing out on what can be. Need an extra push? Feel free to check out our latest episode of Shapely TV where we pose the questions are you keeping your cuffing season bae or is it time to come out of hibernation for a Spring fling?
Blow the Dust Off That Resume
When was the last time you looked at your resume? Many of us only look at our resumes when we’re looking for a job. I must admit I was once guilty of that bad habit. Whether or not you’re currently looking for a job, your resume is something that you want to keep as current as possible. Why? If you’ve been around for the past year or so you know that life happens. You can be set today and displaced tomorrow. Having a current resume on hand means you never have to get ready, you are ready.
Earlier this year Jasmine Omo did an amazing article titled “Five Professional Habits to Leave In 2020” where she drops quite a few gems and resources. View the article and give your resume the Spring refresh it needs.
Spring Into A Self-Care Regimen
Now more than ever, self-care and mindfulness is at the forefront of everyone’s minds… as it should be. For one to pour out, they themselves must be filled correct? Alternatively, we can stick to the age old saying “for you to take care of others, you must first take care of yourself.” With that said, self-care can come in many forms. I say, try a few things and see what does it for you.
You can try the more popular things such as meditation, yoga and even exercising. I encourage you to try some of the things that often go overlooked such as a spa day, a simple day of rest (clear your schedule and do nothing), some light redecorating and even lighting some what I call “smell goods” and engaging in aromatherapy. What I used to do at the end of every work week was take myself out to dinner without company and simply unwind. It worked wonders! Decompression is life.
It’s Your Business to be About Your Business
Have you checked in on your professional goals and aspirations lately? What you wanted last year may not be what you want this year. What skill have you improved upon that will position you where you desire to be? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you may need to revisit your business plan and/or your professional goals. It will tell you what you need to work and/or research to achieve those goals.
If you’re anything like me, those goals have changed significantly amid the pandemic. How I planned on achieving those goals changed as well. Whether you have a formal plan composed or a simple list written on a napkin, revisit it and give it the refresh it needs.
Make Room for Fun, You Calendar Will Thank You
Last year was a doozy! Travel plans were canceled, cruise ships were left docked, gatherings wert virtual and so did events. With COVID testing more widely available and the vaccine rolling out, the travel industry is slowing but surely picking up steam. What does this mean for you? It’s time to close that laptop screen and put down that phone, but not before you check out Shapely’s event page.
Check your calendar and start adding. As we add new events to our site, you can add new events to your calendar. I’m not saying abandon all things virtual, but now is the perfect time to mix it up a bit. Don’t forget to wear your mask and social distance so we can do so safely.
Don’t Forget That Friend’s List
While we’re making it a point to clean out all things dusty, don’t forget that friends list of yours. People grow. Sometimes people grow together and sometimes people grow apart. Some think this only applies to romantic relationships however, this applies to friendships as well.
You’re probably not the same person you was a year ago. Heck, with everything going on you may not be the same person you was a month ago and that’s fine. If you aren’t ready to clean out your friend’s list, one technique I’ve learn is to adjust the way I deal with or react to the things I don’t care for. I’ve found power in silence and solitude, this goes back to the self-care mentioned above. A good portion of things I don’t even respond to. One of my favorite phrases has become a simple “Okay.” People are who they are, if they’re not adjusting, you might have to.
I hope these tips give you more insight on just how beneficial a good Spring cleaning can be. While you remember your closet, don’t forget your causes. If you have anything to add or like what you’ve read, feel free to share, like and/or comment.
