There’s More Than One Body Ody Ody Type!
October 6th is National Plus Size Appreciation Day. Many will be celebrating all month long and although plus size people everywhere appreciate this day, some body types often go overlooked in media, print and general acknowledgement. With the body positive movement pushing forward like never before, most of the plus size body type we see represented are the hourglass or pear shapes. There are quite a few other body types out there that are deserving of just as much love and just as much shine. What are they?
Now lets talk representation and unconscious bias. Lizzo– say what you want about her music, one thing Lizzo does do is put on for her shape. This may be why so many people are outraged by her scantily clad outfits. We should ask ourselves, is it the outfit or the body type that we're mad at? We all have unconscious biases. Although, some may be very conscious of theirs and mask it with “preference.” Check your biases at the door and appreciate people of size for who they are. Your body type shouldn’t determine what you’re allowed to wear, how much of it you’re allowed to wear or where you can be featured.
For those responsible for talent selection, let’s also keep this in mind when casting, featuring and even posting on social media. Let’s not only be size inclusive, but shape inclusive. A size 22 comes in many forms. It is important to represent as many as we can within reason.
